Rent My Car Out

Label the spare. Hide the house fob.

You are about to rent out your car and you have two keys that look the same. One goes in the lockbox — inside a Faraday pouch, so a boxed fob cannot wake the car. The other stays home, also bagged. Mixing those up is how a guest leaves with your only fob.

Prices change — check Amazon before you buy.

The unlabeled key

If it looks like every other Honda fob, it will live in a junk drawer.

People listing a first car usually have a dealer key and a spare. After three turnovers the spare is “the black one,” then it is “whichever one was in the kitchen,” then it is gone. A guest who finds two unlabeled fobs in the box will take both “so we don’t get locked out.” A valet will toss the unlabeled one in a bowl.

Put a tag on the trip key that a stranger can read in a dark lot: the car’s nickname, the color, or the word “spare.” Not the street address. Not the gate code. Not “Turo — 14 Oak.” A tag that publishes where the car sleeps is a map.

Amazon’s custom embroidered luggage-tag keychain is a Customize Now listing — you type the text when you order. Keep it boring. “Blue Civic spare” is enough.

Bag the fob that sits in the lockbox. A listed car sitting with a boxed fob can be woken by a relay attack. Put the trip fob in the pouch, put the pouch in the lockbox. The guest opens the box, takes the fob out, then unlocks. Do not leave it sealed when they try to start the car. Use the second pouch on the house spare. How the guest actually gets the key: Lockbox.

Relay theft

Test the pouch with your own fob before you trust it.

Buy the two-pack. Put your own fob in one pouch. Walk to the listed car and try the handle and the start button. If the car still wakes, the pouch is not doing the job — try another orientation, or do not pretend you solved it. One pouch goes in the lockbox with the trip fob. The other stays home on the house spare.

This is not a tracker and it is not a substitute for Turo’s tracking rules. If you run GPS or cameras, disclose them. Policy: Turo’s page about tracking and technology devices. The GPS compare is on Trackers.

If you have more than one car — or a pile of valet keys, padlock keys, and “the other Civic” — a small wall cabinet beats a bowl on the dryer. Mount it inside, not in a garage window.

The pieces

A tag, a pouch, and a cabinet if the pile is getting silly.

Custom embroidered luggage-tag keychain

Custom embroidered luggage-tag keychain

Amazon Customize Now. Type a nickname or “spare.” Never a street address, a gate code, or the word “Turo” plus a location.

Who it’s for
Anyone handing a spare to a stranger through a lockbox. First car, fifth car — unlabeled keys still vanish.
Why you care
You can tell a guest “the tag says Navy Rav4.” You can tell yourself which fob is the trip key after a long week.
Install friction
Order the text you actually want. Split-ring onto the trip fob. Keep a matching tag on the house copy if that helps you, with different words.
Watch-outs
Do not embroider the plate, the VIN, or the home address. A cute “Turo keys!” tag is advertising.

SUPERLIT Faraday pouch 2-pack

SUPERLIT Faraday pouch 2-pack

Signal-blocking pouch for the trip fob. Put the fob in the pouch, put the pouch in the lockbox. Guest opens the box, takes the fob out, unlocks. Use the second pouch on the house spare.

Who it’s for
Push-button / proximity cars parked at home between trips. Especially if the house is close to the driveway.
Why you care
Relay theft does not need to break a window. It needs a live fob and a few seconds. The pouch is cheap insurance if it actually blocks your fob.
Install friction
Put the trip fob in. Seal it. Put the pouch in the lockbox. Test at the car with your own fob in the pouch before you relax. Second pouch stays in the house on the spare.
Watch-outs
If they try to start the car with the fob still sealed in the bag, the car will not wake. Say that in the pickup message. A pouch that fails the walk-to-the-car test is a pouch, not a solution. Replace it if the seal wears out. The SUPERLIT window lockbox listing also includes a pouch — that one is for the trip fob in that box. See the window lockbox.

Barska 20-position wall key cabinet

A lockable wall cabinet with twenty hooks. For the person who is about to list a second car and is already losing the first spare.

Who it’s for
Two or more listings, or one listing plus house keys, padlocks, and a bike lock you keep promising to label.
Why you care
A bowl is not a system. Hooks you can tag mean the trip fob is either in the lockbox or on its hook — not “maybe in the jacket.”
Install friction
Screws into a wall inside the house or a locked office. Not on the garage glass. Keep the cabinet key somewhere that is not the cabinet.
Watch-outs
This does not replace the lockbox. Guests never see this cabinet. If you only have one car and two fobs, a tag and a pouch are enough — do not buy furniture to feel official.

The rest of the pack

The $19 kit is the paper, not the trunk.

The Starter Kit is the spreadsheet, 24 guest messages, and the 14-day checklist. The hardware on this page is what you buy separately.
