The job
A box is so you do not have to be there. It is not a hide-a-key.
Most people listing a first car will not meet every guest. A combination lockbox lets the guest start on time while you sleep, work, or sit at a gate two terminals away. Missed handoffs kill reviews. A box on a pole you control — or screwed to a wall you control — is the usual fix.
Write the pickup method in the listing: lockbox, not “I will text you.” Send the code in Turo messages the day before, never in the public description. Turo support cannot read the guest the code. Change it after every trip so yesterday’s guest is not today’s thief. The pickup order — license first, then the code — is on How Turo lockbox pickup works.
Confirm the guest’s license before the box is live. Remote handoff: use the license photos in the trip. Do not leave a live combination for an unconfirmed guest. The check-in steps live on First trip and on Turo’s page about checking a guest in and out.
Window, hang, wall
Clip over a window, hang on a pole, or screw into a wall you own.
Window hang (SUPERLIT). Clips over a rolled-up car window when you have no pole or wall. The car is the mount. Take it off before the guest drives. Same combo rules as the other boxes.
Hang box (5400D). Over-the-knob / shackle style. You clip it to a fence post, a dedicated pole, a door you control, or — carefully — a fixed point on the car. Take it with you if you move the listing. It also swings, scrapes paint, and can get slammed in a door or left on a car that goes through a wash.
Wall box (5401D). You screw it to a surface and it stays. Garage jamb, carport post, a locker wall you are allowed to drill. Harder to walk off with the whole box. Useless if you do not control a wall, and ugly if you mount it where the sidewalk can watch you punch the combo.
If the car lives on a street or in an apartment lot you cannot modify, the window hang is the usual first box. A 5400D still works if you have a pole that will be there at 11 p.m. If you have a garage or a fenced pad, the 5401D is the calmer install. Either way: one box, one code, one place you can describe in two sentences.
Do not write a home address or the word “Turo” on the box.
A labeled rental advertises a car that sits with a key in it. Photo the closed box in your pre-trip shots so you can show it was shut when the guest arrived. Put the trip fob in a Faraday pouch, then put the pouch in the lockbox — that blocks a relay attack on a car sitting with a boxed fob. The guest opens the box, takes the fob out, then unlocks. - The car is the mount. You can describe “black box on the driver’s window” in two sentences. Change the combo after every trip. Send the new code in the app, not in the listing.

- Roll the window down, hang the hook, roll it back up. Pad the contact points. Confirm it will not block a camera or a plate.
- Watch-outs
- The listing includes an RFID / Faraday pouch — put the trip fob in that pouch, then put the pouch in the box. Guest takes the fob out before they unlock. Window hang can scratch paint; use foam or a pad. Do not leave it on a public-street car overnight if walking off with the whole box is easy. Do not write the address or “Turo” on it.

- Install friction
- Clip the vinyl-coated shackle on a fixed point that will not walk away. Keep it off paint and out of a slamming door. Confirm it will not block a camera or a plate.
- Watch-outs
- Wind, car-wash, and a yanked shackle are real. A box swinging on a side mirror is a scratch you will photograph later. Do not leave a spare fob in the cup holder “just in case.”
Wall · permanent
Master Lock 5401D wall-mount lockbox

- A garage, carport, or fenced pad you are allowed to modify. Hosts who are tired of a box bouncing on a fence.
- Why you care
- A mounted box is harder to steal whole. Guests find “black box on the left garage jamb” faster than “somewhere on the fence.” Still rotate the combo after every trip.
- Install friction
- Screws, a level, and a surface that is yours. Mount it at a height a guest can work in the dark. Keep the dials out of a camera’s obvious line if you can.
- Watch-outs
- Do not mount it on a shared hallway or a porch the whole block can see you open. Weather cover helps the dials; it does not make the combo optional. If you move, the holes stay.
The boring rules that save trips
Rotate. Photograph. Disclose. Then stop decorating the box.
- Rotate the combo after every trip. Same four digits for six months is how a previous guest walks back.
- Photo the closed box in pre-trip shots. Closed shackle or closed door, in context, with the rest of the car. If the guest says it was open, you have the frame.
- Disclose lockbox pickup in the listing. Guests who expected a person at the curb will review the missing person, not the car.
- No home address. No “Turo.” A sticker that says either is a sign that a key lives here.
- Bag the trip fob, then the pouch goes in the box. The guest has to take the fob out before they unlock. If they try to start with it still sealed, the car will not wake — say that in the pickup message.
