The short answer
Turo’s page about checking a guest in and out says: confirm the license, upload vehicle photos, then hand the key over — or “safely make it available using remote vehicle access technology.” If you use a lockbox, share the code and tell the guest to contact you if they have difficulties. Customer support is unable to provide lockbox instructions to guests.
That last sentence is why a 6 a.m. airport pickup lives or dies on the message you already sent: stall, color, plate, where the box is, what the tag on the fob says, and what to do if the dials will not turn. Permitted lots, the 4-hour window, and the delivery fee are on Turo airport delivery.
Do not give vehicle access to a guest you have not confirmed. That is Turo’s sentence, not a vibe.
The order Turo publishes
Turo’s check-in help page: the first step is confirming the guest’s license. Remote handoff — which is every lockbox pickup — use the license photos in the trip (“View Photos” on the reservation). In person, Turo shows “Confirm license manually” in the hour before start. Do not ask guests to text license photos or dump them into Trip photos unless Turo’s verification team told you to.
Finish license confirmation before trip start or you risk Turo voiding the protection tied to your earnings plan. If they never send photos and you cannot meet them, Turo says cancel the trip. A live combination sitting on a pole for an unconfirmed guest is vehicle access. Do not do that. If they never arrive after you confirmed the license, message them in Turo and follow Turo guest no-show — do not leave the lockbox live.
Turo’s page about technology for remote vehicle access is more specific on the box: share the combination and unlocking instructions only after you’ve successfully completed check-in. Frequently update the combination. Advise the guest to contact you if they have trouble. Support still cannot read them the code.

What the guest actually does
Write lockbox pickup in the listing so they are not expecting a person at the curb. Keep the public description free of the code — the listing is public. The stall, color, plate, and “black box on the left garage jamb” can go in the day-before message. The combination waits until check-in is done.
Turo’s remote-access help: pick a highly rated box, put it in an inconspicuous location, not on a vehicle window. That is Turo’s published line. If you have no pole or wall and you are still using a window hang, that is a hardware tradeoff — the boxes are on How the guest gets the key — and you should know Turo wrote the other instruction.
Photo the closed box in your pre-trip set so you can show it was shut when they arrived. Change the combo after every trip. Turo US says “frequently update”; this site treats that as after every trip so yesterday’s guest is not today’s problem. Turo’s UK check-in note is stricter (key in a lockbox in the vehicle, change the combo after each trip or you could void protection). This page is written for US hosts. Confirm your market on Turo.
Do not write a home address or the word “Turo” on the box. A labeled rental advertises a car that sits with a key in it.
Faraday / RF pouch
Turo’s remote-access help page calls this a radio-frequency (RF) pouch. Turo’s words: always place the key inside the pouch before trips; hand the pouch to the guest at check-in or place it in a secure lockbox. Without a pouch, Turo says the key can still talk to the car, which is how a relay thief copies the signal.

Bag the lockbox fob so a boxed key cannot wake the car. It is not a promise that every pouch blocks every fob.

Manufacturer remote unlock (FordPass, BlueLink, and the rest Turo names) is a different handoff. Turo still wants a physical key with the guest for the trip. If you unlock the doors from an app, you still confirm the license first, and you still bag the fob that lives in the car.
A lockbox does not replace the photo set. Pre-trip: take interior, exterior, odometer, and fuel or charge no more than 24 hours before start; upload no more than 24 hours after start. That clock is on Turo’s check-in page and on First trip.

You leave the trip key in a combination box. After license confirmation and pre-trip photos, you send the code in Turo messages. The guest opens the box and takes the key. Turo support cannot read them the combo. If the shackle sticks, they have to reach you.
