Turo check-in — trip photos vs listing photos

You searched “Turo check-in,” “Turo check-in photos,” “Turo trip start photos,” or “Turo listing photos vs trip photos.” Confirm the license first. Take pre-trip photos in the 24 hours before start. Upload them in the 24 hours after. Listing photos are a different gallery.

The short answer

License. Vehicle photos. Then the key. Listing shots do not count.

Turo’s page about checking a guest in and out (host-facing): the first check-in step is confirming the guest’s license. Remote handoff: tap View Photos at the bottom of the trip’s reservation details and use those license photos. Then document the vehicle. After the license is confirmed and vehicle photos are uploaded, hand the key over or make it available with a lockbox. Do not give vehicle access to a guest you have not confirmed.

Same article: hosts have 24 hours before trip start to take pre-trip photos of the interior, exterior, odometer, and fuel or EV charge levels. You have up to 24 hours after trip start to upload them. Photos must contain metadata showing date, time, and geolocation. The same clocks, plus “photos without that metadata will be deemed invalid,” are on Turo’s detailed US earnings-plan page.

Those trip photos are not the listing gallery. Listing photos — at least 10, named angles, no stock — stay on Turo listing photos.

If this page and Turo’s site disagree, believe Turo. This is not legal advice.

License first

Confirm the primary’s license before anyone gets the car.

Turo’s checking-in-a-guest page: if the guest has not submitted photos when you begin check-in, you can skip ahead and document the vehicle. You still have to complete license confirmation once they submit.

One hour before start, Turo displays Confirm license manually at the bottom of the verification status screen. Use that if they have not submitted photos within one hour of trip start, or if you already agreed to meet in person. Do not ask guests to upload identity photos to Trip photos or send them by text unless a customer-support agent or a Verification team member told you to. Turo’s guest check-in page: hosts cannot view or save those identity images once the check-in window closes.

Finish license confirmation before trip start or you risk Turo voiding the protection tied to your earnings plan. If they have not submitted photos within one hour of trip start and you cannot meet them in person, Turo says cancel the trip. How, and the $25 / $50 host-cancel fees, live on Turo host cancel.

Turo’s guest trip check-in guide (last updated April 13, 2026): guests can begin check-in up to 24 hours before the scheduled start. US guests who did not upload a driver’s license when they booked must upload it up to two hours before the trip starts, or Turo cancels. In person, the guest has to present the physical, current, valid license they uploaded — not a photo, screenshot, or digital license.

The license at check-in is the primary’s. An extra driver on Details is not the pickup person — Turo additional driver. Wrong person at the curb is a no-show report, not a verbal yes — Turo unauthorized driver.

Two photo jobs

Listing photos sell the car. Check-in photos date-stamp this trip.

Listing photos live on Vehicles → the car → Photos. Turo’s listing-photos guide: at least 10, interior and exterior, from named angles. Turo crops about 20% on upload. Stock and AI are prohibited. Covering the plate is allowed. That gallery is what a guest sees before they book. It does not document odometer, fuel, or a crease that showed up last Tuesday. The listing walk is on Turo listing photos.

Check-in photos are trip photos. Turo’s checking-in-a-guest page names the set: interior, exterior, odometer, and fuel or EV charge levels. Turo’s US earnings-plan page: pre-trip photos taken no more than 24 hours before scheduled start and uploaded no more than 24 hours after start. Photos without metadata showing date, time, and geolocation are deemed invalid. Use the Turo app when you can so the timestamp and pin are on the file.

Guest Help is stricter on count, not on host duty. Turo’s guest trip-photos guide asks guests for at least 15 exterior photos and at least 8 interior photos, plus fuel or charge and odometer. Host Help on the check-in page does not print those counts. Do not treat 15 / 8 as a host floor Turo printed for hosts. Do photograph the four sides, wheels, glass, seats, carpets, trunk, dash (fuel or charge + odometer), and a close-up of every existing scratch.

The clocks

24 hours to take. 24 hours to upload. 24 hours after the end.

Copied from Turo’s checking-in-a-guest page and Turo’s US earnings-plan page. Print only what those pages print.

  • Pre-trip take: no more than 24 hours before the scheduled start.
  • Pre-trip upload: no more than 24 hours after trip start.
  • Post-trip take and upload: no more than 24 hours after trip end. Same set: interior, exterior, odometer, fuel or EV charge.
  • Damage report: up to 24 hours after trip end to report vehicle damage.

Turo’s checking-in-a-guest page: the system requires photo evidence on invoices for incidental costs or post-trip issues you report (cleaning, smoking, or damage). Turo’s violation-fees page: $25 if you submit a damage claim and have not uploaded valid, time-stamped pre- and post-trip photos that document the car’s condition (US, Canada, France, and UK). That $25 is a host violation fee, not a guest cleaning Extra. The claim path after those photos is on Turo damage claim.

Early start is a separate clock. Turo’s guest check-in FAQ: if the host and the vehicle are ready and both sides agree, check-in and trip start can complete up to one hour before the scheduled start. The entire check-in process has to finish in the app for that early start to be valid. Do not hand a key in the lot at T-minus 90 minutes and call it check-in.

The first booking walk — fuel, messages, the 10-day review ask — stays on First trip. This page is the check-in split: license, trip photos, clocks.

Lockbox is after check-in, not instead of it. Turo’s checking-in-a-guest page: once the license is confirmed and vehicle photos are uploaded, share the lockbox code and tell the guest to contact you if they have difficulties. Customer support is unable to provide lockbox instructions to guests. Do not leave a live combo for an unconfirmed guest. Pickup order is on How Turo lockbox pickup works. Bag the lockbox fob so a boxed key cannot wake the car.

What this page will not do

No invented host photo count. No listing-gallery shortcut. No off-app license text.

Host Help names interior, exterior, odometer, and fuel or charge. It does not print “15 exterior / 8 interior” as a host requirement. Guest Help does. This page will not promote the guest count as a host floor.

A listing photo from last month is not a pre-trip photo. Shoot this trip in the 24-hour window, in the app when you can, with metadata on the file.

Do not collect a license photo in iMessage. Do not dump identity photos into Trip photos unless Verification told you to. Do not start the trip without finishing license confirmation.

Check-in is not a calculator input. The homepage calculator still starts at $60/day, 50% occupancy, $500 fixed, $25/trip, a $60 maintenance reserve, 80% Balanced. Those are planning numbers so they can be changed. A missing timestamp is not a $25/trip cost in that model — it is a claims problem.

Checkout, briefly

Same angles. 24 hours after the end. Then the damage window is closed.

Turo’s checking-in-a-guest page: hosts have up to 24 hours after trip end to take and upload post-trip photos, and up to 24 hours after trip end to report vehicle damage. Match the pre-trip views. Photograph fuel or charge and the odometer again. If something is new, photograph it in place before you clean it up. The rest of the claim fork — resolve vs file, $250 / $1,500 / $2,750 — is on Turo damage claim, not here.

Five questions

FAQ

How does Turo check-in work for hosts?

First step is confirming the guest’s license. Remote: tap View Photos on the reservation. Then take and upload vehicle photos — interior, exterior, odometer, fuel or EV charge. After that, hand the key or share a lockbox code. Do not give access to a guest you have not confirmed. Confirm Turo’s page about checking a guest in and out. This is not legal advice.

When do I take Turo check-in photos?

Take pre-trip photos in the 24 hours before scheduled start. Upload them in the 24 hours after start. Photos need date, time, and geolocation metadata. Post-trip: take and upload within 24 hours of the end. Confirm live Help. This is not legal advice.

Are Turo check-in photos the same as listing photos?

No. Listing photos are the gallery guests see before they book — at least 10, no stock. Check-in photos are trip photos of this car, this trip, with metadata. Reusing last month’s listing shot is not a pre-trip photo. Listing walk: Turo listing photos. Confirm live Help. This is not legal advice.

What if the guest has not uploaded license photos at Turo check-in?

You can skip ahead and document the vehicle, then finish license confirmation when they submit. One hour before start, Confirm license manually appears. If they still have not submitted and you cannot meet them, cancel the trip. Finish confirmation before start or you risk voiding plan protection. US guests who skipped the license at booking have until two hours before start, or Turo cancels. Confirm live Help. This is not legal advice.

Can a Turo trip start early?

Yes, if the host and the vehicle are ready and both sides agree. Check-in and start can complete up to one hour before the scheduled start. The entire check-in has to finish in the app. Confirm Turo’s guest trip check-in guide. This is not legal advice.

The rest of the pack

The $19 kit is the check-in order, not a claims desk.
