Unauthorized driver · United States · Aug 2026
A Turo unauthorized driver is anyone Turo did not approve on that trip. Only the primary guest — the person who booked — picks up and returns. An extra driver has to be Turo-approved on the trip Details page. Hosts cannot approve a driver. A verbal yes voids the protection tied to your earnings plan.

The short answer
Turo’s page about additional drivers on a trip: the guest who booked is the primary driver. They are financially responsible for anything that happens during the trip — including incidents, damage, or violations caused by their additional driver. Someone Turo approved to drive is an additional driver. Turo notifies you and shows that name on the trip Details page.
The primary guest must be the one to pick up and return the vehicle. Do not give the car to anyone who is not listed as the trip’s primary driver. Doing so will void the protection tied to your earnings plan. Contact customer support and report it as a guest no-show.
Hosts are not able to approve an additional driver. If a guest asks you to, send them Turo’s adding-a-driver instructions. Giving verbal consent or otherwise allowing an unapproved driver to drive will void your protection plan.
If this page and Turo’s site disagree, believe Turo. Turo’s additional-drivers Help does not print a dollar amount for unauthorized driving. We will not invent one.
Who is who
Turo’s page about adding a driver to a trip (guest-facing): a guest can request up to eight additional drivers at no extra cost, any time after booking. Turo suggests submitting at least 24 hours before start so the extra driver can create and verify an account. They can also add a driver while the trip is in progress. How guests add one, the eight-driver cap, and what you check at handoff: Turo additional driver.
That additional driver must get approved, have their own Turo account on an email not tied to any other Turo account, meet age and license rules for the country, and meet the age bar for that vehicle class. More expensive cars sit higher. Host age is a different number than guest age — Host age.
How they request it: Trips → Manage trip → Add a driver (or open trip Details → Add a driver) → the extra driver’s email. If that driver gets an approval email, Turo says they can drive even if the status display on Details has not caught up. Turo will not discuss the additional driver’s approval status with the primary. You look at Details for the name Turo already told you about. You do not become the screening desk.
Under 25: Turo says young driver fees apply and cannot be removed or refunded at the end of the trip. Turo does not print one dollar amount on that page. We will not invent it. You do not add a second off-platform “under 25 tax.” Guest minimum age by class is on Turo guest age.
Pickup and return
Turo’s guest adding-a-driver page is blunt: the additional driver does not need the primary in the car while they drive. They are not permitted to pick up at the start or return at the end. If the guest sends someone else to pickup, the host refuses access and reports a guest no-show. If they allow anyone Turo did not approve to drive, Turo voids the guest’s protection plan.
Turo does not permit booking for someone else. The trip has to be booked by the intended primary so Turo can confirm eligibility and a payment method in that primary’s name — they may not use anyone else’s card. Changing the primary is not a host favor: the guest cancels and the new primary rebooks. You do not “switch the name in chat.”

Someone else is at the car
Turo’s host additional-drivers FAQ: an additional driver came to pick up — only give the vehicle to the primary, never to an additional driver. If you do, Turo voids the protection tied to your earnings plan. Report a guest no-show instead.
Turo’s page about guest no-shows: if you already confirmed the license and the primary sends anyone else — even an approved additional driver — do not give them the vehicle. Report it as a guest no-show. You must report within 72 hours of the scheduled trip start. Guest-no-show clocks and any partial earnings live on that Help article. Do not invent a host share here. Do not mix those clocks with a host cancellation — that walk, and the $25 / $50 host-cancel fees, are on Turo host cancel. The wait, the 15-minute response, and how Turo pays a followed-the-steps no-show are on Turo guest no-show.
License at check-in has to be the primary’s. Turo: you do not need to confirm an additional driver’s license, because the primary assumes all financial responsibility. If the photos (or the plastic in their hand) belong to an additional driver, do not accept, do not move forward. The primary uploads their license. That check-in order is on First trip. A remote code is still the primary’s code — do not text it to a spouse in the lot. Lockbox order is on How Turo lockbox pickup works. If a spare fob is sitting in the box, bag it so a boxed key cannot wake the car.
Already driving
Turo’s host additional-drivers FAQ: if an unapproved driver is driving, use Turo messaging. Remind the primary that only approved additional drivers may drive. They must request to add the driver via Turo — they can do that while the trip is in progress — or no longer allow that person to drive. If you do not receive notice the driver has been added, report the issue to customer support.
Stay in the app. The kit line is “add the driver in Turo,” not a side-channel screening questionnaire. Coverage does not move in iMessage. If the additional driver is the one who returns the car, Turo’s host FAQ is one sentence: report the issue to customer support. A late return is a different report — wait 30 minutes, stay in the app — on Turo late return. Do not mash those two into one inbox rant.
If something is actually bent, the 24-hour host-claim window still exists. Photos, not a parking-lot speech: Claims.
Prohibited use
Turo’s page about prohibited uses: permitting someone who is not an Approved Driver to drive a vehicle booked via Turo is a prohibited use. Approved Driver, on that page: provided the required docs, meets booking requirements, is in good standing, and is listed on the reservation. Additional drivers may be added. All drivers are jointly and severally liable. The primary remains primarily liable.
Consequences may include a violation fee, full liability for damage repair, lowering or fully removing liability coverage, voiding protection for physical damage, a temporary suspension, or removal from Turo. Turo does not print a dollar amount for that violation fee on that page. Turo’s host additional-drivers article also does not print a host fee for unauthorized driving. We will not invent either.

Your cost, not a Turo rate
The homepage calculator starts with example numbers so you can change them: $60/day, 50% occupancy, $500 fixed, $25/trip, a $60 maintenance reserve, 80% Balanced. Handing the car to the wrong person does not turn 50% into a better month. It is how a first-timer voids the protection tied to the plan they just modeled. Do not bake a made-up unauthorized-driver fee into that $60. Turo did not print one on the Help pages this guide uses.

Five questions
Yes, if Turo approved them as an additional driver and their name is on trip Details. Up to eight, no extra cost, any time after booking — even mid-trip. They can drive without the primary in the car. They cannot pick up or return. Hosts cannot approve anyone. Verbal yes voids protection. Confirm Turo’s page about additional drivers on a trip.
Only the primary guest who booked. Turo: do not give the vehicle to anyone not listed as the primary. Doing so voids the protection tied to your earnings plan. Report a guest no-show. An approved additional driver still cannot pick up.
Do not hand over the car. Never to an additional driver, even an approved one. Report a guest no-show — Turo’s page about guest no-shows. Earnings and the 72-hour report window live there. Do not mix that clock with host cancel.
No. The guest adds them in Turo. Send Turo’s page about adding a driver to a trip. You do not confirm an additional driver’s license at check-in. You do refuse if the license at check-in belongs to an additional driver — the primary has to upload theirs.
Message the primary in Turo: add the driver in the app, or stop the driving. If you get no notice they were added, report to customer support. Permitting a non-Approved Driver is a prohibited use. Turo names a possible violation fee and does not print the dollar. We will not invent it. Confirm Turo’s page about prohibited uses.

Pickup is still the primary. A lockbox is still not a second driver. Occupancy in the calculator is still an example so you can change it.
