When something goes wrong

Most trips end with a dusty car and a full-enough tank. Some do not. This page is the calm version: what to photograph, how long you have, and when Turo may reduce or void protection. It is not a horror story and it is not a promise that every scratch pays.

Turo can change these numbers — check your listing.

First hour

People, then photos, then Turo — in that order.

If anyone is hurt, that is a 911 / local-emergency problem, not a chat problem. If the car is in the road, make it safe. If it is a crash, a police report helps Turo consider other evidence when photos cannot carry the whole claim.

Then photograph what you see, in place. Do not “clean it up for the adjuster.” Use the Turo app so metadata (date, time, geolocation) is on the file. Turo says photos without that metadata are deemed invalid.

Stay in Turo messaging. Be specific. “Is everyone okay?” then the fact pattern. Save the lecture for never.

The clocks

Three different windows. Do not mix them up.

From Turo’s detailed US earnings-plan page and Turo’s page about checking a guest in and out:

If this page and Turo’s site disagree, believe Turo. The dedicated host-claim walk is Turo damage claim — guest damaged my car. A guest who keeps the car past the scheduled end is a late return, not a damage claim — Turo late return. A booked trip you cannot fulfill is a host cancellation, not a claim — Turo host cancel.

What they ask for

Photo evidence is the job.

Matching pre- and post-trip sets. Close-ups of the damage. The wide shot that shows which panel. Odometer and fuel/charge. Interior if the claim is interior. Receipts that are not cash-only scraps — Turo says cash receipts alone are not enough proof of payment when they administer a claim reimbursement-only.

You will still owe the damage responsibility on an eligible claim: $250, $1,500, or $2,750 depending on plan. That is the first dollars, not a cap on your life. Excluded items stay yours. Turo’s exclusions include, among others: damage that was already there; interior and exterior wear (exterior dings 3 inches or less count as wear); deterioration; many mechanical failures; underside scrapes; personal items left in the car; tires that were bald, old (Turo: 6+ years), under 4/32 tread, or not inflated. US plans do not pay you for lost hosting income while the car sits.

Turo says some repair facilities are ineligible for reimbursement. Confirm the shop with your claims specialist before you drop the car. That list changes.

When coverage shrinks

Turo may reduce or void protection. These are the named ways.

This is not a complete legal list. It is what Turo’s pages and the Terms actually call out for people listing a car:

  • You did not confirm the guest’s license before they took the car. Turo: you risk voiding the protection tied to your earnings plan. See First trip.
  • High-FMV car, no activated OEM tracker. Turo’s US tracking policy: FMV $125,000+ requires an activated OEM tracker and location data when asked. Missing the tracker: Turo may withhold up to 20% of covered damages above your damage responsibility. Fail to provide requested location data: Turo may reduce or void protection. Compare devices on Trackers.
  • Reckless or prohibited use — usually on the guest side. Turo’s prohibited-uses article and guest protection terms: excessive speeding, wanton or reckless disregard, DUI, unauthorized drivers, and the rest of that list can void the guest’s contractual limit and shrink liability toward legal minimums. Telematics and cameras can be used as evidence. Your host plan is a separate contract — do not assume a guest void automatically writes you a blank check, and do not assume you are untouched if you also broke a host rule.
  • Fraud, collusion, or material misrepresentation. Turo’s car-sharing-regulations article: they will void your protection and you receive no coverage if they find intentional or fraudulent material misrepresentation, fraud, or collusion with guests.
  • Interior camera or cabin audio without written consent in Turo messages. Turo: they may remove you from Turo. That is an account problem and a claims problem.
  • AirTags as active tracking. Prohibited. Penalties up to suspension and removal.

Wear-and-tear arguments are not “voided protection.” They are “this was never covered.” Do not file a 2-inch door ding as a total and then decide the platform is crooked.

Tone

Stay calm. The chat log is evidence too.

A guest who admits a scrape in the app is easier than a guest you accused of a felony before breakfast. Ask if everyone is okay. Ask for photos. File. Let Turo’s process run. If you need a body shop, ask the claims specialist which facilities are eligible.

Do not take a side payment off-platform to “keep it off Turo.” You can void the protection you wanted. Do not threaten reviews. Do not show up at a hotel uninvited.

If the claim is denied, read the reason. Missing photos and missing license confirmation are the two first-timer ways to lose a claim that might have been boring and payable. Fix the process for trip two.

The rest of the pack

The $19 kit has the calm damage message.

24 guest notes, including the first “is everyone okay?” Not a claims service.
