Turo late return fee — no charge under 30 minutes, then half a day or a day plus $20

The Turo late return fee in the US is no charge under 30 minutes, half the average daily trip price from 30 minutes to under two hours, and one day’s average plus $20 from two hours. Wait 30 minutes after the scheduled end, stay in the app, ask the guest to extend, then report inside 24 hours.

The short answer

Wait 30 minutes. Stay in the app. Ask for an extension. Report inside 24 hours.

Turo’s page about reporting a late return: if the guest is running late, ask them to extend. Guests can submit a request to extend up to 24 hours after the scheduled trip end. If the vehicle is available, they should request that extension in Turo — not in a text thread. Turo’s system will either make the trip change or pass the request to you to confirm or decline.

Wait at least 30 minutes after the scheduled end to report a late return. Vehicle protection remains active. You may be eligible for guest fees for additional usage if you report within 24 hours of the trip’s end. Support has 48 hours to review and notify you of the outcome.

If this page and Turo’s site disagree, believe Turo. Amounts and clocks can change.

If late returns made you want to list, the $19 Starter Kit is late-return and extension guest notes, a take-home spreadsheet, and a 14-day checklist. One-time. The calculator stays free.

Still out, still reachable

An extension in Turo is coverage. A text is not.

Turo’s page about additional usage for guests: they must request an extension in Turo as soon as they know they are late. They can do it while the trip is in progress and up to 24 hours after the originally scheduled end. A trip change is only valid if the request is made through Turo and the host accepts it there.

They cannot extend if the request is declined or expires, the vehicle is unavailable for all or part of the extra time, or they have insufficient funds. If they cannot request an extension, they must return at the original end — or immediately if that time has already passed.

If the next guest is already booked into those hours, declining is not being difficult. Honoring the next trip is the job. If a late return then forces you to cancel that next booking, that is a host cancellation, not a late-return invoice — the fee and the “previous trip made the car unavailable” exception live on Turo host cancel. None of that is a promise Turo will excuse you.

US late return charge bands

No charge under 30 minutes. Half a day from 30 minutes. A full day plus $20 from two hours.

These are Turo’s published US$ bands for the United States and its territories, from the additional-usage guest page. They apply when a guest keeps the car past the scheduled end without approval in the Turo system. Turo’s two Help pages do not print a formula for “average daily trip price.” We will not invent one. Confirm the live article before you quote a dollar to anyone.

If you charge additional usage, Turo also charges the guest a 3% Turo administrative fee, and an airport fee if the trip started or ended at an airport where Turo has a permit and the airport charges a fee on incidental costs.

Guests may also be charged a $50 improper return fee if they are unresponsive, abandon the vehicle, cause a trip cancellation, or for other reasons Turo determines — plus the 3% admin fee and that same possible airport fee. That $50 is a separate line from the $20 late-return fee. Turo decides it. You do not type it into a side Venmo.

How to report

Trips → Details → Report Issue. Two late-return labels. Then wait for Turo.

From Turo’s reporting-a-late-return page:

  • Open the Trips tab and choose the trip that is running late
  • Open the trip Details page and tap Report Issue
  • Select either Late return: Vehicle not returned or Late return: Vehicle returned
  • Answer the questions presented
  • Tap Report issue and Confirm
  • Allow customer support 48 hours to review the issue and notify you of the outcome

Use “Vehicle not returned” if they still have it. Use “Vehicle returned” if they brought it back late and you are reporting after the fact. The 24-hour report window is the eligibility clock for additional-usage guest fees. Missing it is how a first-timer turns a payable late return into a shrug.

That article points to the additional-usage policy for the charges. Stay in Turo messages. Do not move the guest to your personal number so you can “handle it faster.” Coverage and fees live in the product, not in iMessage.

If the car is gone and the guest is unresponsive, report in Turo. Then Turo support. That is the path. Do not start with a parking-lot confrontation. Do not invent a theft clock Turo did not print on those Help pages. A GPS tracker is for knowing where the car is, not for walking up to the guest — compare devices and Turo’s tracking rules on Trackers. If you hide a recovery unit, disclose it: Turo’s rules before you hide one. “Hidden” means harder for a thief, not a secret from the guest.

After it comes back

Same photos as a normal return. Then extra miles, fuel, and damage — each on their own clock.

A late return is not a free pass to skip the inspection. Same angles as pre-trip. Fuel or charge. Odometer. That walk is on First trip. Physical damage is still a 24-hour host-claim window — Turo damage claim and Claims. Extra miles are a separate invoice, not a late-return band; odometer photos are the record — Turo extra miles.

If a spare fob is still sitting in the lockbox, bag it so a boxed key cannot wake the car. The trip fob is with the guest until they return it. Do not leave an unbagged spare in a hang box while the car is still out.

The homepage calculator starts with example numbers so you can change them: $60/day, 50% occupancy, $500 fixed, $25/trip, a $60 maintenance reserve, 80% Balanced. A late-return fee is not occupancy. It does not turn 50% into a better month. Do not bake Turo’s “average daily trip price” into that $60 — Turo did not print that formula on the two Help pages this guide uses.

What this page will not do

No police-first script. No invented host share. No off-platform “just keep it another day.”

Five questions

FAQ

How do I report a late return on Turo?

Wait 30 minutes. Trips → the trip → Details → Report Issue → “Late return: Vehicle not returned” or “Late return: Vehicle returned.” Answer the questions, Report issue, Confirm. Support has 48 hours. Report inside 24 hours of trip end for additional-usage eligibility. Confirm Turo’s page about reporting a late return.

What is the Turo late return fee?

US bands on Turo’s page about additional usage for guests: 0–29 min no charge; 30 min–1h 59m half the average daily trip price; 2 hours+ that average day + $20; 24 hours+ Turo decides. Plus 3% admin, possible airport fee, possible $50 improper return. Turo did not print the “average daily trip price” formula on that page. Amounts can change.

What if a guest didn’t return my Turo car?

Ask them in Turo to extend if the car is free. If they keep it without Turo-system approval, report “Vehicle not returned.” Protection remains active. Do not confront them. A tracker is location, not a meetup — Trackers. Unresponsive: report, then Turo support.

Can a Turo guest extend a trip after it ended?

Yes, in Turo, up to 24 hours after the original end — and only if you accept it there. They cannot extend if the request dies, the car is booked, or funds fail. Then they return now. A text is not an extension.

How long do I wait before reporting a Turo late return?

At least 30 minutes after scheduled end, then report. The additional-usage no-charge band is 0–29 minutes. Eligibility for those guest fees: report within 24 hours of the trip’s end. Support review: 48 hours. Clocks can change.
