Turo cleaning fee, cleanliness standard, and the cleaning Extra

You searched “Turo cleaning fee,” “how clean does Turo car need to be,” “Turo cleanliness standard,” or “Turo cleaning extra.” You clean before every trip. Guests are not expected to. There is no routine host cleaning invoice. The $150 US fee is a violation Turo validates — not a car-wash bill you type.

Turo can change these numbers — check your listing.

The short answer

You clean. They return normal dirt. Abuse is a $150 US violation — if Turo agrees.

Turo’s cleaning policy for hosts requires you to clean the vehicle before trips. Turo also suggests wiping frequently touched surfaces: keys, exterior door handles, trunk latches, and interiors.

Turo’s cleaning policy for guests says the guest is not expected to clean before they return the car. You should expect dirtiness from normal use, weather, and where they drove. You report only what “only could have been caused by irresponsible or abusive behavior.”

If Turo validates that evidence, Turo charges the guest a $150 cleaning violation in the US (plus a 3% Turo administrative fee) and credits those $150 to host earnings. France is $50 plus 3% on that same page. Those numbers can change — read the live Help article.

Crumbs, a sandy floor, and a car-wash exterior are not a fee. They are your turnover. Put that cost in the calculator, not on the guest.

How clean it needs to be

Clean enough that a guest will not refuse the car at check-in.

Turo does not publish a “vacuum twice, wipe the wheel, leave a checklist” spec. The host page’s rule is simpler: clean before trips. If you cannot meet Turo’s cleanliness standards, snooze or unlist so you are not canceling — or getting canceled — for a dirty cabin. How to snooze or unlist — defined date vs uncertain date — is on Turo unlist.

Turo: multiple cancellations for cleanliness concerns may trigger an account review. Repeated cancellations on your part hurt host metrics. As a last resort when appropriate, Turo may remove you under the Terms.

If the guest inspects at check-in and is concerned the car has not been cleaned and disinfected, they can contact Turo and cancel. Turo processes that as a host cancellation: a $50 fee and no payout of host earnings for that trip. The rest of host-cancel fees and the unlist table: Turo host cancel. Same $50 line is on Turo’s host violation-fees page. That $50 can change.

Remote lockbox pickup does not lower the bar. The guest still photographs the cabin. A coffee cup from the last trip is a review. A cabin that looks uncleaned is a cancel. The first-booking inspection habit is on First trip. Cleanliness is a category rating and a $150 violation path; Turo’s 5-star rate — the quality bar that can remove an account — is a different number on Turo reviews.

Eligible (Turo may charge the guest) Ineligible (you vacuum; no fee)
Interior Biowaste or bodily fluids; waste in vents or between a door panel and the window; major stains or residue over a large area that would need steam cleaning or a full detail; significant pet hair Wrappers, bottles, sand, dirt, crumbs you can throw away, wipe, or vacuum; water stains; minor food or drink spills; sticky spots
Exterior An extreme amount of caked-on mud, dirt, sand, or insects that needs professional-level exterior detailing. Hawaii only: red dirt caked on interior or exterior, including tires, plus a tracking screenshot Dirt, mud, or sand a car wash will take off
Smell Not a cleaning violation. Physical smoking evidence is a separate No smoking report Unpleasant odors, including smoking odor

Eligible vs ineligible lists are Turo’s words, shortened, from the host and guest cleaning pages. Photo evidence is required. Confirm the live articles before you tap Report.

The Turo cleaning fee

You do not invoice a $40 detail. Turo charges $150 if the mess is eligible.

People search “Turo cleaning fee” expecting a host-set number, like a hotel’s departure clean. Turo’s current host policy is not that. There is no slider for “$25 cleaning.” There is a violation Turo reviews.

Turo’s page about reporting a cleaning issue: you have 72 hours after the trip ends to report an eligible cleaning issue in the app and charge the guest a cleaning violation fee. Open the trip Details page → Report Issue → Cleaning violation. Attach photos. You may write a note to customer support. Then Confirm.

Turo: you will need pre- and post-trip photos taken no more than 24 hours before the trip and 24 hours after it ends. Turo’s check-in page says pre-trip photos of interior, exterior, odometer, and fuel or charge are taken no more than 24 hours before start and uploaded no more than 24 hours after start; post-trip photos within 24 hours of trip end. Photos need metadata — date, time, geolocation — and Turo requires photo evidence on post-trip issues you report, including cleaning.

Give customer support 48 hours to review, per that reporting page. If the evidence supports an eligible issue, Turo charges the guest $150 and adds those funds to host earnings. Turo may, at its discretion, remove the guest. The guest cleaning page also adds Turo’s 3% admin fee, and an airport fee if the trip started or ended at a permitted airport that charges a fee on incidental costs.

That $150 is not your 80% Balanced trip-price share. Turo’s reporting page says it adds those funds to host earnings. Confirm the live trip receipt. Do not treat $150 as a typical extra, and do not file crumbs as abuse. Turo’s host-fees page lists a separate penalty for ineligible reimbursement invoices — $50 / $200 / $500 by offense. Cleaning violations go through Report Issue, not a homemade invoice, but the point is the same: do not bill what Turo says is ineligible.

The cleaning Extra

Turo’s current extras article does not name a cleaning Extra.

Turo’s Offering Extras page lists two types: conveniences (examples: prepaid EV charge, unlimited mileage, pet fee) and gear (child seats, picnic baskets, bikes, kayaks, camping gear, coolers, and the rest of Turo’s list). New listings are auto-opted into prepaid refuel. Turo shows more than 50 items. If the Extra you have in mind does not appear on the list, you cannot add it.

That article does not name a “cleaning Extra,” “post-trip cleaning,” or a prepaid detail. A Turo host blog from 2021 said the Post-trip cleaning Extra would no longer be available as of November 2, 2021, and that hosts would no longer be able to charge a fee for cleaning outside the $150 violation. Current Help is what binds. Open your listing editor and look. If cleaning is not on Turo’s list, you cannot invent one.

Turo also says you may not use extras to collect a deposit or “convenience” fee, and you may not require an Extra to book. A fake “cleaning Extra” is that restriction, not a product. A pet fee Extra is different: honest if you actually allow pets. Significant pet hair is still an eligible cleaning issue on Turo’s cleaning list. The extras cut (90% to the host on that page) is on Turo extras.

Smoke odor is not a cleaning fee. Turo’s host cleaning page: unpleasant odors, including smoking odor, are ineligible. If there is eligible physical evidence of smoking, report it under Turo’s No smoking policy — not as cleaning. Turo’s guest no-smoking page lists a $150 smoking violation in the US, Australia, Canada, and the UK ($50 in France) plus a 3% processing fee, with examples such as new burn marks, a smoked cigarette, or ash that is clearly not sand. Turo’s smoking-report page: 72 hours after trip end, same photo windows. Those amounts can change. The full smoking walk — photos, vape vs odor, the $150 fee — is on Turo smoking.

Your cost, not theirs

$25 a trip is this site’s turnover default. It is not a Turo cleaning fee.

The homepage calculator ships with $25 per trip as variable cost — turnover clean plus fuel or charge you absorb. That is an example so you can change it, not Turo’s price for a wash, and not something you bill the guest. If a gas or hybrid comes back short, that invoice is Turo’s $10 refuel fee on Turo fuel — not this $25, and not a cleaning fee. Same defaults as the rest of this site: $60/day, 50% occupancy (15 booked days, about 5 trips), $500 fixed, $60 maintenance reserve if that $500 was only payment and insurance, 80% Balanced.

Five trips × $25 = $125 of turnover in that sketch month. Host revenue at those defaults is about $720. The $150 violation is for the rare eligible mess, after Turo reviews photos. It does not replace the vacuum you run between trips.

Leave hours between bookings so you can actually clean. Trip buffers live in listing settings — How to list. If the sheet is already red at $60 and half occupancy, a cleaning-violation fantasy will not make it green. Subtraction is on Money. Daily rate is on How to price your Turo car.

Hawaii red dirt

A named extra rule, not a mainland shortcut.

Turo’s host and reporting pages add a Hawaii-only eligible issue: red dirt caked on the interior or exterior, including tires. Photo evidence is not enough. You must also add a screenshot that shows tracking data, the date, and the time placing the guest in an area Turo lists (Waipiʻo, Mauna Kea access road, Papakōlea, and the rest of that table). We are not reprinting the location list — open Turo’s reporting article if you host in Hawaii. Tracking rules if you use a device are on Trackers.

Five questions

FAQ

Can Turo hosts charge a cleaning fee?

Not for ordinary dirt. Report an eligible cleaning violation in the app within 72 hours. If Turo validates it, Turo charges the guest $150 in the US plus 3% admin and credits those $150 to host earnings. You do not type your own car-wash invoice. Amounts can change — Turo’s host cleaning page.

How clean does a Turo car need to be?

Clean before every trip. Turo suggests keys, door handles, trunk latches, and interiors. Guests are not expected to clean on return. If they refuse a dirty car at check-in, Turo can treat it as a host cancellation: $50 and no payout. Confirm the live Help pages.

What is Turo’s cleanliness standard?

Host duty: clean before trips, or snooze the listing. Guest return: normal-use dirt is expected. Eligible violations are abuse — biowaste, major stains needing a full detail, extreme caked-on exterior, significant pet hair. Wrappers, a car-wash exterior, minor spills, and odors do not qualify.

What is the Turo cleaning Extra?

Turo’s Offering Extras article does not name one. If it is not on Turo’s extras list in the listing editor, you cannot add it. You may not use extras as a convenience fee. A pet fee Extra is not a cleaning Extra. Details: Turo extras.

What is the Turo cleaning violation fee?

$150 plus 3% Turo admin in the US, Australia, Canada, and the UK; $50 plus 3% in France, on Help. Guests may also owe an airport incidental fee at some permitted airports. Report within 72 hours with pre- and post-trip photos. Turo reviews in about 48 hours. Numbers can change.
